Gion Festival



In July The Gion Festival is done every year in Kyoto
It is one of the famous festivals in Japan
When festival is done coming very hot Kyoto summer


Festival held at Yasaka-jinja(Shrine)
Festival highlight is the parade on 17 July.
YAMABOKO (30 floats)and parade at town.


This festival is believed to have started over 1000 years ago when floats were made and paraded in the town to appease the deity of plague and illnesses.

Every YAMABOKO (Floats ) and some YAMA(Floats ) have musicians and playing the Japanese flute, Japanese drums and Japanese bells musicians are seated on the second level of the floats.


During the festival period, people go and visit each of the floats, where they can buy omamori (good luck charms) made from sasa (bamboo grass for warding off evils).
14 to 16 July at night Shijo Street and around there become Pedestrian precinct and many Japanese girls dressed in yukata (summer kimono) around the areas.
